Guild Meeting

The guild met for our regularly scheduled monthly meeting on the third Monday of the month at the Senior Adult Center in Benton.  Sondra introduced 3 new blocks for our 5:30 workshop featuring 1930's fabrics and blocks.  Below are the blocks made by some of our very industrious members who are keeping up with the workshop.

Aren't they pretty?  I have lagged hopelessly behind in this endeavor. 

 

After our 5:30 workshop and business meeting, Wilma Blair gave us a wonderful tutorial on reverse applique.  She brought along some of her finished pieces.

 

Wilma also introduced us to a method of applique called back basting.  Here is an online tutorial and another one here with lots of pictures.  Wilma made the quilt below using the back basting method.  She highly recommends this for designs with a lot of pieces.  The blocks for this quilt were available from Bunny Hill Designs blog back in 2009 as a free block of the month.  This photo really doesn't do justice to Wilma's artistry and for that I apologize.

 

After Wilma's program, we had show and tell.  There were some really lovely quilts and the pictures just don't do them justice.  (More apologies!!)   All I can say is: You should have been there!! 

 

Fay finished her quilt using a technique learned in Maggie Ball's class.  This is the front.

 

The back shows how she quilted it.

 

Helen discovered a quilt top she had finished some time ago.  It was quilted by  Eddie Landreth.  You can see a closer view of the quilting of this quilt and some of his other work here.

 

Betty finished her Baltimore Album quilt.  I wish you could see the fine details.

 

Myrna finished her quilt made from squares we swapped in the guild a couple of years ago.

 

 

Jean is the talk of the town in a new quilted jacket she made.

 

Pat W. has gotten a head start on Christmas gifts.

 

Sondra finished a baby quilt.  This was her first attempt at prairie points. 

 

 

Pat S. designed and digitized a machine embroidered Bible cover as a gift.

First Wednesday

Gayle graciously opened her home to the guild today for First Wednesday.  It is always a treat to visit with other quilters and share ideas and good food.

Gayle had prepared teriyaki chicken and rolls for us.

We brought veggies, salads, and .....

...desserts!!

For weeks we've been so blessed to
have had a lot of rain and cooler
temperatures.  Suddenly summer
has arrived and with it comes the
high humidity.  Therefore, it was
a treat to escape the heat while
visiting with fellow quilting
addicts at the Saline County Library
on Monday.  Fewer than usual took
advantage of this opportunity, but
we still managed to solve a few
problems and get some work done
on our projects.

If you've been reading this blog for any length of time, you are probably familiar with the fact that knitted and crocheted scarves are quite popular with us.  Jane has taught several people how to make these scarves.  Pat provided us with some entertainment by demonstrating a new yarn she had purchased at Michael's.  The best part of this yarn is that it needs no knitting or crocheting!  It comes pre-knitted (if that's a word) in a long tube.  You simply insert your hand through the length of the tube, grasp the other end, and pull it back through.  Below are some action shots.

Fay showed us the completed project that we will be making in our Saturday workshop here at the library on August 24.  This workshop is open to members of the guild and there is a $5 fee plus supplies.  It is going to be a lot of fun!

 

 

 

As I stated earlier, we did manage to make progress on some of our projects:

Pat worked on her wool applique.

 

Jane is close to finishing an embroidery project.

 

Cely "found" some fabric languishing in a drawer and made this quilt which she is hand quilting. 

 

We meet again on Wednesday for potluck at a member's home.

Guild Meeting

The Guild met for our regular monthly meeting Monday night at the Senior Adult Center on Jefferson St. in Benton.

 

Sondra presented a few new block patterns for the 5:30 workshop.  She then asked for those who are participating in this workshop to show the blocks they have made.  Here are just a few of the many lovely blocks:

After the workshop our guest speaker, Mary Schopp gave us an informative and humorous presentation on the behind the scenes workings of her shop, The Rabbit's Lair.  She also brought goodies from her store and set up a table where we enjoyed shopping.

 

At the end of the meeting we had our regular show-and-tell.  I did not get any photos of the many beautiful quilts but may be able to add some later from Tiffanee or you can go to her Facebook page.
