A trip to UAMS

While our guild is involved in making numerous charity quilts every year, it is not always possible to see first hand how much the quilts are appreciated.  Tuesday, seven of our members were honored for their quilt-making efforts. (I was invited along to take photographs of the event.)

It all began several months ago when Jean Corley's daughter Gayle Corley was invited to help decorate the new women's inpatient unit at the UAMS Psychiatric Research Institute in Little Rock.  Gayle suggested hanging small quilts in each of the rooms. When asked where these quilts could be obtained, she of course thought of her mother.  Thus a quilt project was born.   Jean enlisted the aid of several guild members and all were instructed on the specifications.  The quilts all had to be 40” square and they had to be made using pastel colors.  The hospital then had the quilts framed.

Ken Hall, Director of the floor, took us on a tour of the rooms and each room was decorated with original framed works of art that complemented the quilt in that room.  In the pictures below, you will see the person who made the quilt and then a close up of the quilt.  (Click on picture to enlarge it)

At the end of the tour, we were treated to a lovely luncheon in the library.  Seated around the table from left to right are Beth Lane, Helen Mathews, JoAnn Thompson, Cely Slover, Gayle Corley, Jean Corley, Betty Tucker (fund raising coordinator for UAMS), Gwen Rogers, Sidney Morris and Fay Poe.
If you've read this blog at all you will know we quilters always have a good time together and much of the time there is food involved!
Thanks to ALL in the guild who are involved in any way in the making of quilts for charity!  Your efforts are very much appreciated.
Until next time~~~Gwen

QA

The Quiltaholics Anonymous group met today at the Saline County Library in Benton.

There were only a couple of "problems" to solve.  Marguerite wanted our opinion on binding and finishing her fall wall hanging.  Should it be tan with red piping or use the acorn fabric?  We voted on a simple binding of the darker acorn fabric.
Here is a close up of the embroidery.  Can you see the little beads she has added to the berries?
(Click on any of the pictures to enlarge them.)
I brought my santa table runner (begun in Fay's Saturday workshop) to prove that I actually finish things---well, almost.  It just needs the glasses, fringe and bells.  For some ridiculous reason I decided to make a miniature version and brought it today for advice on finishing.  This is my first attempt at miniature quilts so it was good to be able to talk to the experts today.  So I'll add a couple more rows of white to the sides and then bind it in red.  Judy suggested adding a string of little stockings and Pat just happened to have the perfect pattern.  Judy also said I should embellish each stocking with the name of a family member.  Maybe this project will be completed this millenium!!
Pat always has the neatest wool work projects.  (Here is the "perfect stocking" mentioned above.)
Judy brought a fall table runner which she had adapted from the famous pumpkin pattern everyone was making a while back.  She changed the leaves a little using a cucumber leaf as a pattern!  How clever is that?
Judy also brought a quilt she had finished using the spiral quilting tutorial I demo'd last month in the Daytime Stitchers group.
Here is the back.  You can see the spiral quilting better.
Brenda worked on a crazy quilt block which she had begun in a class by Brian Haggard last month.  He has written several books on crazy quilting.  You can find out more about him here
Fay brought a quilt she had finished and done the quilting on her home machine.
 Here is the back.
Here is a close up of the front.  She quilted stars in the white spaces.
 Sidney is working on hexies.
Windy worked on her Shiny Happy World project
Cely is hand quilting a charity quilt.
This charity quilt was pieced by Sidney and quilted by Tiffanee.  Carolyn sewed on the binding.
Carolyn worked on a prayer shawl.
Fay worked on her little flowers that will be one day appliqued.
Marguerite stitched  this piece.
She shared her favorite hoop by Cosmo.  The only draw back to this hoop is that it tends to slip a little.  Her advice:  add a little 2-sided tape to the edge of the inner hoop and that problem will be solved.
Linda is doing cross stitch on this Halloween tablecloth.
You should join us next time!
Until then~~~Gwen
